Other than four titles from , this CD reissue has tenor saxophonist Harold Land's first sessions as a leader. Teamed up on the West Coast with trumpeter Rolf Ericson, pianist Carl Perkins, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and drummer Frank Butler, Land shows that hard bop was very much alive in Los Angeles in the late '50s. His tone is cooler and softer than it would become later on, but it was already pretty 9/

Harold in the Land of Jazz Having established a name under other leaders (particularly with the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet in , and Curtis Counce in ), this was Harold Land's first album under his own name. The material is first-rate - a mix of standards (Speak Low, You Don't Know What Love Is) and originals/5(10).

Highlights include Perkins' 'Grooveyard', a moving interpretation of 'You Don't Know What Love Is' and Hope's 'Nieta'. 'Harold In The Land Of Jazz' is an album of exhilarating West Coast hard bop which deserves to be more widely known. Read more/5(10).

Despite Leonard Feather's raves in the liner note of this CD reissue (which adds two additional selections to the original five-song LP), the music on this post-bop set by tenor saxophonist Harold Land is good but not great. The original five songs (four Land originals plus one by drummer Ndugu) have some dated electronics by keyboardist Bill Henderson and electric bassist Buster Williams (who.
